Erfoud, north east of Zagora in the oasis region of Tafilalt was one of the last centres of resistance against the French Protectorate, maintaining resistance till 1932.  Afterwards the French kept a wary eye on the local tribes, building a garrison in the town and creating an administrative centre.

Today it has become a prime spot for heading into the desert and visiting the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga. Here are several hotels and a basic camping site available.
